I purchased this electric kettle for $19.95 here on Amazon to replace a Hamilton Beach kettle that just.. died (no reason, it just decided that it would no longer heat up and Hamilton Beach offered me no solutions other than "we're sorry". I read some professional reviews of kettles and decided that I wasn't inclined to pay $60 - $100 to replace one that could just as easily decide not to work, but I did use those reviews to determine what factors I wanted to consider in my purchase. I'm more than happy with this Home Image Electric Kettle!
Some facts not apparent from the description:
The kettle has an oval footprint -- it's narrower than long -- so the base plate requires less horizontal real estate on your counter.
The opening IS large enough to reach your hand into (not that you should do this while the water is boiling). This does come in handy for cleaning, if you need to do more than descale it for some reason (I just boil some white vinegar and water occasionally to descale mine).
The heating element is a long vertical tube that appears to be stainless steel that runs along the inside back of the kettle. The element is not embedded and invisible as it was in my Hamilton Beach -- but, it certainly boils water much faster! I don't foresee any type of problem with normal use (boiling water).
The lid is not removable. The boiling water pours neatly when the lid is closed. There is a filter screen at the spout - which is removable for cleaning.
The water level indicator is marked in ounces as well as liters.. however, the ounce markings are at the same places as the liter markings and aren't for quantities normally used in most non-metric recipes (i.e. 51 ounces, 17 ounces, 42 ounces, etc).
The unit is made of a brushed stainless steel -- seems solid and well constructed. Looks nice and "upscale" on the counter. The stainless steel does get hot on the outside -- that's what stainless steel normally does -- conduct heat -- so if you're expecting a cool touch kettle, look elsewhere. I use the handle to move mine around -- so I'm content with the reality of a hot kettle.
The handle is solid, not the most comfortable I've ever used and not the least comfortable. I didn't feel like the kettle was unbalanced in my hand when full.
The on/off switch is clear and lights up when the unit is turned on. Unlike my Hamilton Beach which required that you depress the switch to turn the unit on (and which switch was occasionally accidentally depressed), this switch must be clicked upward to turn on the kettle -- I like this much better and think it is safer.
The kettle does automatically turn off when the water reaches a boil.
In conclusion, I'm very happy with this purchase and think for the price point it's a great deal.
