If you have a need for water at a specific temperature anywhere from 104-212F (40-100C) and you want it quickly without having to fuss with thermometers, this is the perfect kettle. It will bring up to 1.5 liters (6.3 cups) of water to the desired temperature (1 increments) and hold it there until you are ready for it.
I originally bought it for loose tea. Green tea requires water at 170 to 180, white tea is best brewed at 140 to 160, and oolongs call for 180 to 200. I used to heat water on the stove or in the microwave. If I needed cooler water, I would then either add cold water or wait for it to cool, using a thermometer or just guessing. Now I just set it and forget it. It saves me at least 5-10 minutes every time I brew tea. I put the water in the Pino, set the temperature, and turn it on. Then I can go about weighing the tea, preheating the teapot and the thermos, or reading the paper while the water is heating up. My previously complicated and messy operation is now smooth and efficient.
It can also bring the water to a boil, of course, for black teas, and it will then hold it at 207 -- just below boiling so the oxygen does not get depleted if you are not able to use it immediately. And you can quickly bring it back to a full boil by pushing the on/off button twice. As far as I know, this is the only kettle that will bring water to a specific temperature and hold it there.
The kettle is simple to use and essentially fool proof. For boiling water, just push the On button. It will bring the water to a boil and then back off to about 207 and hold. For cooler water, use the up/down arrows to set the digital temperature then push On. It will bring the water to that temperature and hold it there. You can change the target temperature at any time except when it is first heating to a boil. While it is heating and holding, the actual temperature is displayed, so you can see how close it is and where it is holding.
The temperature is very accurate. I checked it at several temperatures over the entire range with two different food thermometers. It was right on (within a few degrees).
The unit is attractive and appears to be well built
I do have a few minor criticisms, but they are relatively minor.
1. It has a little more variability in the target temperature than I would like. When it first reaches the set point, say 180, it shuts off, but the temperature continues to climb by 8-10 degrees (to about 190). As it sits, it gradually cools until it gets 4-5 degrees below the set point, then it starts heating again. This time is seems to overshoot a bit less, probably because it didn't need to get as hot. It then continues to cycle about the target temperature in a range of about 10-12 degrees.
2. There is no external water gauge. It comes with and internal gauge that is pretty much useless. It's a metal strip that hangs down into the kettle with tabs showing water level. They are difficult to read and the strip is just pushed into a slot in the lid hinge. Mine was loose inside the kettle when it arrived. I used it a few times, but it kept falling off so I threw it away. I thought this would be more of a problem when I first got it, but I just put plenty of water in the pot and measure when I pour.
3. The kettle is all stainless steel, so the outside of the pot gets hot. But many kettles have this problem. Some type of exterior insulation would be nice, but I haven't burned myself yet.
4. The digital readout serves two functions. While the arrow buttons are being pushed, it shows the target temperature. At all other times, it shows the water temperature. It would be nice to have two readouts so I could see the target and current temperature at the same time.
5. The plastic lock/release on the lid has a little too much play. A couple of times it got misaligned and took a little fiddling to get it to work right again.
6. It can be kinda noisy when heating. I haven't used a regular kettle for some time, but I recall them being at least as noisy. It heats quickly so the noise doesn't last long.
I've had this kettle for two years. I use it at least 5-6 times a week and sometimes 2-3 times a day. Except for a few minor glitches described above, it has worked almost flawlessly. It has saved me a lot of hassle.
I recently discovered a new and very important use for this kettle. About 2 months ago, I went on a new diet to moderate blood sugar levels and prevent diabetes. Part of the diet requires that I drink at least 64 oz of water every day AND that I drink at least 8 oz before I can eat anything. The diet recommends hot water with a little lemon. I have found that to work well. Hot water is easier to drink in quantity than cold. I bought a 22 oz Thermos hydration bottle (Thermos Stainless-Steel 22-Ounce Leak-Proof Hydration Bottle) so I can have hot water handy all day. If I fill it three times a day, I've met my 64 oz goal.
I was using tap water plus water from the instant hot, but the temperature is hard to control. I almost scalded myself a couple of times. I've read that water from hot water tap can have some health hazards. I don't know if that is valid, but it takes time for the tap water to warm up and still there is no temperature control.
Pino to the rescue! The Pino can heat 22 oz of water to 130, my preferred temperature, about as fast as I can get hot water from the tap. I set it to 125. With the overshoot, it's at just about 130 when I pour it. And it will hold it there if I happen to leave the room. If I do this three times a day, I have met my goals. I love having water that it always at just the right temperature. Using this plan, I have lost about 15 pounds in about 2 months.
I discovered an interesting side benefit. I squirt a little lemon juice in the kettle while it's heating up. After a few days, I noticed that the mineral deposits on the bottom of the kettle around the heating unit are all gone.
I'm about to look for a larger hydration bottle so I don't have to refill it so often. I just wish that Pino made a desktop version that would keep water hot using a very low voltage and be very quiet.
